The photograph is not laid flat on the page. It is a slab with depth and weight, lit from one side, and it turns as the page is scrolled, so the light travels across the picture instead of sitting still on it.
The turn stops short of a full circle on purpose. A photograph that goes all the way round spends half the journey showing its back, and the picture is the point.
